This community of practice is managed by the NSW Department of Education and Communities. The site has webinar sessions including: Facilitating Manufacturing Sustainability Training in NSW which outlines the Sustainability Skills Resources and details of the NSW arrangements for traineeships for the MSS11 qualifications. Facilitating the uptake of Sustainability Training which outlines the CarbonProof program and resources for carbon management systems. See … [Read more...]
About carbon sources and sinks
This guide provides general information about carbon sources and sinks. It explains the basic concepts such as carbon dioxide equivalent and demonstrates how different issues might be relevant, depending on the context. The guide includes examples of natural and commercial sources of carbon, calculating carbon emissions and carbon reduction 'sinks'. The information is relevant to several units of competency in the MSS Sustainability Training Package; however the guide is not aligned to a … [Read more...]
About mass and energy balancing
This guide provides general information about mass and energy balancing. It explains the basic concepts and demonstrates that a range of options might be relevant, depending on the context. The guide explains the first law of thermodynamics and provides examples of how it might be applied in mass/energy balancing in both industry and domestic situations. The information is relevant to several units of competency in the MSS Sustainability Training Package, however, the guide is not aligned … [Read more...]
Carbon equivalent (equivalent CO2)
Greenhouse gasses have different average lifetimes and different capacity to trap infrared radiation (heat). To compare the different warming effects of the various gases they are converted into a unit called carbon dioxide equivalents (CO2-e). This unit represents the amount of CO2 that would generate the equivalent warming effect, usually rated over a 100 year span. For example, over 100 years, per mass, methane is listed as 25 times stronger as a greenhouse gas, nitrous oxide is 298 … [Read more...]
National Carbon Offset Standard (NCOS)
From 1 July 2010 Australia has a National Carbon Offset Standard (NCOS) to encourage businesses to offset their greenhouse-gas emissions in a voluntary carbon market. It provides a voluntary standard for businesses to use in becoming carbon neutral and in developing carbon neutral products. It also includes guidance on calculating the carbon footprint of an organisation or product and product life cycle analysis for the purpose of achieving ‘carbon neutrality’. Only emissions sources that … [Read more...]
Greenhouse Gas Reduction Scheme (GGAS)(NSW)
The NSW Greenhouse Gas Reduction Scheme (GGAS) (sic) closed on 30 June 2012. The GGAS Registry will continue to be supported into the future to enable the trade and surrender of certificates by interested parties. The Energy Savings Scheme (ESS) is the NSW-based mandatory energy efficiency scheme for electricity retailers and other liable parties under the Electricity Supply Act. The ESS reduces electricity consumption in NSW by creating financial incentives to invest in energy … [Read more...]
Energy Efficiency Opportunities Act 2006 (Commonwealth)
The Act was repealed in 2014 and the program closed. For more information about the program and its outcomes see http://eex.gov.au/energy-management/energy-efficiency-opportunities/ … [Read more...]
