Embedded or embodied carbon refers to the total amount of carbon dioxide emitted from every stage of an item's production and distribution from source to store. It is usually expressed as CO2 equivalent tonnes. … [Read more...]
Carbon equivalent (equivalent CO2)
Greenhouse gasses have different average lifetimes and different capacity to trap infrared radiation (heat). To compare the different warming effects of the various gases they are converted into a unit called carbon dioxide equivalents (CO2-e). This unit represents the amount of CO2 that would generate the equivalent warming effect, usually rated over a 100 year span. For example, over 100 years, per mass, methane is listed as 25 times stronger as a greenhouse gas, nitrous oxide is 298 … [Read more...]
Carbon credits
A carbon credit is a generic term for any tradable certificate or permit representing the right to emit one tonne of carbon dioxide or carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2-e). The carbon credit system was ratified in conjunction with the Kyoto Protocol. Its goal is to stop the increase of carbon dioxide emissions. It relies on market mechanisms to drive industrial and commercial processes in the direction of low emissions or less carbon intensive approaches than those used when there is no cost … [Read more...]
Greenhouse gas (GHG)
Greenhouse gases refers to the six that are rated under the Kyoto Protocol as having Global Warming Potential (GWP): Carbon dioxide (CO2) Methane (CH4) Nitrous oxide (N2O) Hydroflourocarbons (HFCs) Perfluorocarbons (PFCs) Sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) GHG emissions are reported as million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO2-e) … [Read more...]
