Who is this qualification designed for?
Operators, team leaders, supervisors, sustainability officers, sustainability project assistants and similar roles who need to lead or implement sustainability initiatives in a defined section, team or project within an organisation.
This qualification provides skills for employees who are:
- Working independently or as part of a team or assisting a more senior person
- Contributing to the implementation of the organisation’s strategies and decisions for sustainability
- Required to contribute to sustainability related auditing or reporting
- Implementing sustainability related changes within their own team, work area or section.
What fields do they work in?
The qualification provides skills in addition to the technical and operational skills of employees.
They may work in various sections within an enterprise and in a range of sectors, for example:
- Production
- Maintenance
- Project management
- Administration.
What is their job role?
The primary job role of these personnel will often be in production, operations, and supervisory roles and they will have specific additional responsibilities in relation to sustainability. The sustainability aspects of the role will typically be overlaid on their current role, so that there is an increased focus on the sustainability impacts of their role and an increased focus on sustainability improvements within that role.
Alternatively the qualification may also apply to someone who is working as an assistant to a more highly qualified environmental or sustainability technician or manager.
What kinds of work do they do?
The qualification targets people who have responsibilities for implementing or leading sustainability related actions in part of a large organisation or in an entire small or medium enterprise.
The sustainability actions performed independently by these personnel will generally be those that are easy to implement – often colloquially called ‘the low hanging fruit’. This may involve identifying, implementing and reporting on initiatives but will not require complex assessment, auditing or calculation skills.
Other roles include working under supervision or as part of a sustainability project team to assist in more complex sustainability related tasks and calculations but not undertaking them independently.
