What is the Skill Set?
This Skill Set covers making improvements to energy usage based on available data, and ensuring that improvements are embedded in day-to-day work. This Skill Set applies to the energy value stream for an entire process, site or organisation rather than to part of a process or a work area.
The Skill Set applies to organisations where energy use is known to be significant. If the carbon footprint is known or an energy audit has been undertaken this Skill Set can be used to develop strategies to improve energy efficiency.
The units of competency in the Improve energy usage for a process or organisation Skill Set are:
- MSS015002 Develop strategies for more sustainable use of resources
- MSS405070 Develop and manage sustainability energy practices.
Level and scope
Improving energy usage for a process or organisation includes:
- Analysing and quantifying energy consumption
- Determining the amount of wasted energy
- Determining the causes of wasted energy
- Developing an energy conservation plan
- Developing an energy trading plan
- Investigating alternative sources of energy
- Making recommendations on ways to improve energy efficiency
- Implementing energy efficiency improvements.
Areas covered include efficient use of raw materials, management of waste, electricity (or other energy source) conservation, heat conservation and management, water management, environmental protection and environmental obligations.
MSS015002A Develop strategies for more sustainable use of resources is a general sustainability unit which is applied to energy use in this Skill Set. In the unit the term “emission” is used to cover all losses of resources from the system so energy may be the only “significant resource” used, or energy may be the only type of emission listed in the short list of high emission process steps. The unit includes preparation of an energy audit report.
MSS405070A Develop and manage sustainable energy practices is a unit specific to energy practices. The unit includes energy trading and alternative sources of energy as ways to become more energy efficient. The unit categorises energy use according to lean principles.
Both units require quantification of the amount of energy used and the making of recommendations to improve energy efficiency.
Target group
The Skill Set is targeted at people such as managers and technical specialists who are required to set up and/or maintain systems to improve energy efficiency in an organisation, either alone, or as part of a team.
The Skill Set requires that the learner has technical knowledge of the work area or process and can obtain technical assistance if it is required.
Relationship to other Skill Sets
The Improve energy usage for a process or organisation Skill Set is applicable to plants seeking a broader analysis than that covered in the Determine energy usage Skill Set as it allows for covering the value stream more comprehensively, for example, by looking at energy use from production through to consumption.
The Determine energy usage Skill Set can be used as preparation for the Improve energy usage for a process or organisation Skill Set where the energy efficiency is evaluated and improved.
The Audit energy usage for a work area and Determine energy usage Skill Sets are both about auditing energy usage, so could feed into the Improve energy usage for a process or organisation Skill Set.
