About the explanatory notes

The explanatory notes explain some of the key concepts, terms and practices covered within the core units. They also give some guidance on the scope and level of the unit and interpreting these in selecting evidence for assessment.

About the assessment guides

The assessment guides will assist you as a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) to design your assessment processes and develop assessment instruments. Each assessment guide provides an example of assessment methods and activities aligned to a core unit of competency from a Sustainable Operations qualification.

NB: these sample assessment tools align to the earlier versions of the core units and should only be used as a general reference.

Each one reflects a different manufacturing sub-sector, learner characteristics and business context, which is described in a fictional scenario. The examples of evidence and the assessment projects used in the assessment guides show how the assessment might be contextualised for a sector, based on the scenario.

These are examples only and do not reflect any mandatory requirements for developing assessment tools or collecting evidence of competency. You should interpret the assessment guides with reference to the unit pages, sector guides and other information on this website.

It is intended that you will amend the tools to reflect your own procedures, clients and target groups. For example, you should:

• Decide on the use of workplace-based assessment methods, types of evidence, simulated workplace environment and recognition of prior learning (RPL) based on your training and assessment strategy and consultations with industry
• Include instructions about when and how the learner should submit evidence
• Apply your trialling and validation processes to the assessment processes, instruments and evidence
• Provide guidance for assessors about how to interpret the activities and evidence requirements and what documentation is required
• Contextualise the assessment by focusing on practices, sustainability issues, workplace documents and terminology that apply to the sector or business (see the Sustainability sector guides).
