Embedding Energy Management

Embedding Energy Management is a structured program that provides a suite of practical tools, practice guides, case studies and examples of industry best practice in energy management. It is customised for energy intensive sectors such as foundries and metal fabrication.

The program targets the knowledge and practical skills needed by management teams to develop a strategic response to the challenges of energy management and resource efficiency. Participants learn best practice processes for planning, decision making, implementation, monitoring and reporting in order to achieve bottom line benefits for their business.

Embedding Energy Management was developed in partnership with Energetics, an energy management consultancy, and four pilot sites in industry.

Program overview

There are five modules that cover the essential skills, knowledge and activities for identifying areas of high energy consumption and deciding how to address them.

  • Module 1: Energy and business planning
  • Module 2: Carbon inventory and supply chain impacts
  • Module 3: Energy procurement
  • Module 4: Energy efficiency opportunities
  • Module 5: Energy management systems

Each module is supported by a suite of tools covering:

  • Practice guides – how to plan for energy efficiency and energy management, establish baseline data and plan projects
  • Facilitator guide – how to facilitate each module (planning session) with the business leadership team to embed energy management into business systems, using project templates, sample outcomes and a sample energy management plan
  • Trainer guides – overview of the sessions and activities, learning outcomes, how to use the action learning log, skills survey and guideline mapping to units of competency.

How to use the tools

The program is presented as a kit of tools which can be used in many different ways by businesses, training providers and consultants.

  • Practice guides outline practical steps with links to relevant tools; these can be used by individuals in a business, as part of the structured program or as a basis for developing training/assessment resources
  • Registered Training Organisations (RTOs), enterprise trainers or other facilitators can deliver an integrated program comprised of facilitated planning sessions with supporting tools and activities
  • Individual tools can be used by a business
  • Training providers can select the tools that support their own training and assessment programs
  • RTOs can map parts of the program to units of competency (a guideline mapping to Sustainable Operations units of competency is provided in the kit).
