Module 1: Energy and business planning

Businesses need to respond to energy tends such as escalating energy prices, the price of carbon and the demands of new regulatory frameworks. These can affect the business directly and by impacting the region and the supply chain.

About the module

This module focuses on how to develop or maintain a sustainability management plan that reflects a strategic response to global trends affecting the business.

In this module business leaders will access tools and case examples to initiate or refresh the energy planning process and integrate their understanding of the current energy trends. This helps the leadership team to capture emerging business opportunities and limit the related business risks. In particular the team will be better equipped to:

  • Research energy and related business trends
  • Identify business risks and opportunities associated with these trends
  • Better understand the broader business drivers for investing in better energy management
  • Begin to develop or refresh energy improvement goals, policies and programs for a manufacturing site.

  • Module 1 practice guide
    This guide presents five key practices to help business leaders make changes in management systems, processes and organisational culture to address energy risks and realise opportunities.

    How to run the planning session for the module – topics, questions and outcomes.
  • Module 1 presentation: Global trends
    This presentation is part of the planning session for Module 1. It can also be used to promote engagement with from senior management and employees. It outlines key global trends that are relevant to the foundries and fabrication sectors and can be customised to the individual business.
  • Energy baseline tool
    In Module 1 use the energy baseline spreadsheet to enter data about energy use and production activity to show trends, annual costs and KPIs.
  • Energy plan template
    Each module contributes to developing the energy plan. The template contains sample information.

Skills development

  • Action learning guide and action learning logs
    This guide explains how to prepare for and facilitate the Embedding Energy Management modules with a skills development focus. It includes an action learning log for each module which is especially useful where a participant is responsible for an aspect of energy management and will be facilitating the planning processes (modules) in the future.
  • Skills survey
    The skills survey contains a set of criteria for each module for participants to identify their capability before and after the program. The results can be used to customise the delivery of the program learning activities and as a skills matrix for the business.
